Writing Center
The writing center gives children the opportunity for many different writing experiences. These experiences should be real and purposeful.
Things to include in the writing center:
Paper: lined, unlined, variety of sizes, colors, shapes
adding machine
index cards
scrap paper
Stamps and stamp pads, masking tape, paper plates, lunch bags, ribbon, stapler, yarn, brads, hole punch
writing instruments: pens, markers, pencils, colored pencils, crayons, chalk, dry-erase markers (all sizes skinny, thin etc)
Chalkboards, dry-erase boards, magic slates
Magnetic letters and boards
greeting cards
stationery and envelopes
dictionary
thesaurus
blank books, newspaper, poetry books, poetry posters, nursery rhymes, pocket charts.
computer paper
typewriter
magazines
different types of pens and pencils with toppers that make choosing fun :)
props
individual folders (portfolios)
Class dictionary
Posters with words for the month or week
Mailbox
word walls
Calendar cut outs
Fun shaped notepads
Ideas: (the materials listed above give students a huge range of activities to do while in this center)
Community Writing Table: Cover a table with white butcher paper for "community writing". Children can write, draw, stamp, or whatever they choose.
Mailbox: Make a mailbox for children to mail their letters in.
Writing Prop Box: Provide hats and costumes to help students with creativity. They can write about the character they are dressed up like.
Bag a Story: Place seven objects in a lunch bag. Have students fold a piece of paper into eight sections. Have them introduce their character in the first section and write a story using all of the objects in the bag.
Books, books, books: Click on Books, books, books, there are a variety of books children can make. Teach them how to make those books and let them write in them.
